Unlike a three phase motor, a single phase motor does not require a three phase power supply. However, it does require voltages and power to operate. A single phase motor is commonly found in households and small load industries. However, it is less efficient than a three phase motor.
A single phase motor is a type of induction motor that produces alternating flux by passing alternating current through a stator winding. The flux produced in the stator is induced into the rotor bars and produces mechanical energy.
Unlike a three phase motor, whose starting torque is provided by an external circuit, a single phase motor's starting torque is provided by a capacitor. The capacitor is connected in series with the starting winding. This capacitor charges the starting winding and is disconnected when the motor reaches 80% of its rated speed.
A single phase motor also has a starting switch to allow the motor to start in the absence of the capacitor. It also has a bimetallic strip to detect overheating in the circuit.
Single phase induction motors are used in electric shavers and large exhaust fans. They are cheaper and robust. They are also used in centrifugal pumps. They are less efficient than three phase motors, but they are very reliable. Unlike a three phase induction motor, they do not require a slip ring. However, they do have a smaller starting torque.
The start winding of a single phase motor is usually offset by 90 degrees from the main winding. In order to provide a 90 degree phase difference, a capacitor can be connected in series with the starting winding.
