Single Phase motors are used in a wide variety of applications. They come in various shaft arrangements, mounting styles, and enclosures. A single-phase motor is suitable for applications in which cooling is a primary consideration, such as refrigerators and freezers. Typical single-phase motors range from 0.5 to 15 horsepower.
Single-phase induction motors do not have a self-starting feature, but instead rely on the principle of electromagnetic induction to produce alternating flux in the rotor. This principle involves a rotor and a stator winding that are wound with single-phase alternating current.
The most common starting method is by introducing an extra winding into the stator. This winding is the start winding, and is usually small in diameter. The start winding contains an electrolytic capacitor. When the motor is started, the capacitor discharges into the start winding, which starts the rotor. Once the rotor reaches about 75% or 80% of its full speed, the switching mechanism removes the capacitor and the start winding. Then, the running winding ramps up to full operational RPM.
Single-phase motors are used in some applications where safety is a priority. Steering gear motors are an example. These motors must remain operational for manoeuvring and propulsion, even when operating in congested waters. Overload protection protects these motors by limiting the amount of power that each phase can handle.
